A couple tips to make your site design (or re-design) work better for you.

You need to put it on paper before we can but it on the Internet. Make some notes about what you want to accomplish, what you want to say.

Collect the digital and print pictures and images you want to use on your site.

Make a list of other sites, including competitors, you like the design and the content on. Also make a list of any dislikes you have.

If you want Internet searchers, search engines and directories to find your site, text is king. When you see a website with a Flash entry page and what is called "eye candy" with no machine readable text (if you can't drag your mouse across it and copy it, it is most likely not machine readable) the design company has almost surely sacrificed high search rankings for flashy pictures. Most visitors want useful information from a site - not entertainment. Most pages, and certainly your index page, need 200 to 300 words using your keywords in context.
